Le Mans. An exciting week in France comes to an end. With the 90th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the third WEC event of the season took place from Saturday to Sunday. The #21 AF Corse trio, consisting of Christoph Ulrich, Simon Mann (USA) and Toni Vilander (FIN), secured the13th place in qualifying.
Hundreds of thousands of fans gathered at the Circuit des 24 Heures for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic and cheered the 186 drivers from all over the world on. Thanks to the consistently good team performance, the anniversary eventof the long-distance classic could be contested without any major incidents. Ferrari is typically very strong on the 13.626-kilometer track. This year, too, it was possible to build on the statistics of previous years.
Christoph Ulrich got into the racing car for the first time on Saturday evening and made up a few places during his stints. He also drove the Ferrari 488GTE in the morning hours and showed strong lap times.
53 of the 62 vehicles that took part crossed the finish line in the Sarthe shortly after 4 p.m. local time. The #21 with Simon Mann at the wheel ended the world-famous spectacle after 339 laps on an excellent eighth place in the LMGTE AM category.
“It’s difficult to put my current feelings into words, to be a Le Mans finisher and in the top ten is just amazing, I first came here in 2015, as a fan. I camped at the Porsche corners among thousands of other tents and mobile homes. My biggest wish back then was just to be able to drive a lap on the track, but that seemed as unrealistic as a flight to the moon. And now to contest the race myself with AF Corse and Ferrari and my hero Toni Vilander is a dream that I could never have imagined.
I can’t say too much about the race itself, it was hard, fast and challenging. You are so in focus that you don’t even notice that much of the race. Our team did an impeccable job, my mechanics, my engineers and the whole team management carried us to this success. I am incredibly grateful to everyone! Now we only have to wait 11 months and 27 days until Le Mans 2023 :)” says Christoph Ulrich.
The next FIA WEC event in Monza is scheduled for July 10th.
